Hepatitis C virus (HCV) belongs to the RNA viruses of the Flaviviridae family, causing most, if not all, non-A and non-B hepatitis. The virus was only discovered in 1989, with more than 60 subtypes and 7 genotypes (1-7). HCV is the leading cause of liver disease and can cause acute and chronic hepatitis. HCV is a virus that can be transmitted through blood from an infected person or blood products. Typical modes of transmission include sharing infected syringes among drug users, unsterile use of needles (tattooing), transfusion of untested blood and blood products, and sexual practices that may involve injury and contact with the blood of an infected person. Newly infected individuals are usually asymptomatic and can be diagnosed with early infection. While up to 30% of infected individuals overcome the infection without any treatment, 70% of infected individuals develop a chronic form of HCV infection, which can lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer. Chronic HCV infection often remains asymptomatic for decades until symptoms indicating severe liver damage appear. It is estimated that more than 71 million people worldwide suffer from chronic HCV.

Patients with acute and chronic hepatitis C are monitored on an ongoing basis at specialised liver disease centres and hepatology clinics. Antiviral treatment is prescribed and supervised by a specialist. Standard treatment today usually involves subcutaneous injections once a week supplemented by daily tablets.

The presence of antibodies to HCV indicates an ongoing infection in a given person with the possibility of virus transmission.
