Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum. In Czech, this disease, which affects men, women and children, is also referred to as mumps or lues

Syphilis is mainly transmitted through sexual contact, whether it is just kissing or direct sexual intercourse. However, the disease can also be transmitted through blood products or from a sick mother to her fetus. Recently, the rising number of infections has been attributed mainly to prostitution, increased promiscuity, risky sexual practices and a decline in condom use. The incubation period of the disease is 9-90 days. However, syphilis cannot be contracted through toilet seats, sharing utensils, cutlery and clothing, bathing, etc.

The infection manifests itself in a wide range of symptoms, mainly on the genital organs, but the cardiovascular system, the musculoskeletal system and the central nervous system are also affected. The characteristic feature is the alternation of symptomatic and asymptomatic periods when the patient feels better.

Treatment consists of antibiotics. It is important to start treatment as soon as possible after infection to reduce the risk of serious illness or even death.

PHASES OF SYPHILIS:

Primary

Secondary

Latent

Tertiary

PRIMARY PHASE - Syphilis first manifests itself by the appearance of a hard red ulcer that does not hurt or itch. The affected person usually discovers it in the genital and rectal area, but in rare cases it may also occur on the lips, throat or tonsils.

SECONDARY PHASE - About a week after the first symptoms, the lymph nodes swell. The ulcer gradually disappears and the disease progresses to the second phase after 4-10 weeks, when the infection spreads throughout the body. The secondary stage is characterised by a diffuse red rash affecting the trunk, hands, feet and mouth. If the rash appears in your hair, it may even start to fall out.

Common accompanying manifestations:

Malaise

Increased temperature

Sore throat

Joint pain

Weight loss

LATENT PHASE - If syphilis is left untreated in the first two stages, visible symptoms disappear within two years and the disease progresses to the latent phase. This is characterized by only mild manifestations or is completely symptomless. The patient's infectiousness to the environment is much lower than in the other stages of the disease, but syphilis damages the patient's body. The latent period ends after about 10-20 years.

TERTIARY PHASE - If the disease progresses to the tertiary stage, active manifestations occur again. These include mainly neurological and cardiovascular symptoms. Typically, so-called gummata (red-purple deposits on the affected areas) appear, caused by a particular type of chronic inflammation. They may ulcerate, secrete pus and their occurrence in conjunction with damage to nervous tissues and organs often results in psychological problems (speech disorders or dementia).

The examination is carried out as a simple blood drop from the tip of the finger, but the result is known in a few minutes in the comfort of your own home.
