HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a human immunodeficiency virus. HIV is a virus that, if left untreated, causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). It is estimated that there are more than 30 million people living with HIV in the world today and up to half of these people have not been diagnosed and are unaware of their infection. This undiagnosed population accounts for the majority of HIV transmissions worldwide. HIV treatment is highly effective. It is important to start treatment as soon as possible after infection to reduce the risk of serious illness or even death.

What are the signs and symptoms of HIV? There are three stages of HIV infection and each stage may or may not have the following symptoms:

In stage 1, the bloodstream contains high levels of the virus. At this time, it can easily be passed to other people. Within 2 to 4 weeks of exposure, many people develop flu-like symptoms. Not everyone has these symptoms and it is possible for HIV to progress without any indication that the virus is present in the body.

In stage 1, symptoms may include:

- muscle and joint pain  - fatigue - Increased temperature - sores in the mouth - night sweats - rash  - sore throat - swollen glands

If these symptoms occur, it is important to seek medical attention, especially if the individual believes they have been exposed to HIV. Early treatment can be effective in reducing the impact of HIV.

During phase 2, the virus is active but reproduces at very low levels. There are usually no symptoms or very mild symptoms during this phase. This is why stage 2 is also known as the "asymptomatic stage" and is considered a period of clinical latency of HIV infection. Those who are treated may remain in this stage for many decades, possibly for the rest of their lives, because drug therapy reduces viral activity. Without treatment, the clinical latency phase lasts approximately 10 years.

Stage 3 HIV is also known as AIDS, but AIDS is a distinct and separate diagnosis from HIV. HIV is a virus, but AIDS is a syndrome with many signs and symptoms.

Symptoms at this stage vary widely as they tend to be associated with various opportunistic infections. The most common symptoms include:

- spots under the skin or in the mouth and nose - blurred vision - diarrhea lasting more than 1 week - swollen lymph glands - constant fatigue - fever that returns - memory loss - depression - pneumonia - weight loss - ulcers in the mouth, anus, and genitals.

Conditions that commonly develop at this stage include tuberculosis (TB), fungal infections of the respiratory system, lymphoma, hepatitis and some cancers.

The test is performed as a simple fingertip blood drop, but you can know the result in minutes right in the comfort of your home.
